I have a little over 1000 dollars to invest. I wont need the money any time soon so time is not an issue. I am not interested in any types of stock or anything else that involves risk. I just want to make the most of the investment.

There’s no such thing as no risk. Everything has risk. Property values are going down right now so property is a risk. The US dollar is declining so buying US bonds or other US based securities is a risk.
So the real question is how to make sure you get a good return over time with a minimal risk. I suggest Silver in either 1 ounce American Eagles or 1 ounce Canadian Maple Leafs.

A government savings bond is probably the least risky investment. You can buy them at many banks, or at http://www.treasurydirect.gov

Federal Savings Bonds. You purchase double which is redeemable in a set # of years. And if you don’t redeem them right way, they earn interest. It’s like giving the US a loan and they pay you back double +!!

Shop around for the highest yield CD or money market account, but FYI…every investment has risk. CD’s and MM accounts have what is called inflation risk…..read up on it!

it does not matter what you invest in, there WILL be risk of some sort. I purchased green energy stock as in wind, solar, recovery of waste management systems which I believe will go up in the future but there is still risk involved. look at GRGR.PK on the NYSE and SBX.V and TMG.V and APV.TO on the TSX. these are resonably strong companies trying to build for a cleaner future in our world.

Short-term treasury bills are virtually risk-free, which is why they are used in finance as a proxy for the risk-free rate of return. Long-term, they have earned a fraction of a percent over inflation, on average. However, there have been periods (like now: T-Bills 1.37%, inflation about 4%) when T-Bills returned less than inflation, which translates to a negative return.
TIPS (Treasury Inflation Protected Securities) are a good alternative. Both T-Bills and TIPS can be purchased directly from the U.S. Treasury by setting up an account at http://www.treasurydirect.gov .
CDs seem to be safe but they are exposed to the risk of inflation. The longer the term, the greater the risk. (90 day CDs are currently yielding about 3.8%, which is close to the inflation rate.) The same is true of government bonds, with the exception of TIPS.
Return in excess of the risk-free rate is what compensates investors for exposing their capital to risk. The greater the risk, the greater the potential return.
The bottom line is that if you are setting money aside for future use and don’t want any risk exposure, then you aren’t investing. Your objective in this case is to protect your money from inflation.

open an international term deposit account with a major australian or NZ bank. They are guaranteeing almost 9% at the moment, year by year. Their largest banks are as solid as ours, even more so at the moment.
