With a turbulent stock market and a real estate market in serious decline, it definitely makes sense to seek out alternative investments. One possibility that many wealthy individuals overlook is making investments in private equity. This simply means investing in a company that is privately held rather than in a public company that offers its stock to the public over a stock exchange. People who make these sorts of investments are sometimes referred to as “angels,” a term that originated in show business, to describe individuals who provided financial backing for theatrical productions. It is now widely used to describe an investment in any business venture, particularly start-up companies. Many of today’s most successful technology companies received their initial capital from wealthy individuals.
An angel investor is sometimes called an accredited investor. That is defined as an individual who has a net worth of at least a million dollars not including the value of their residence.
Angel investing is riskier than investing in public companies because many times the companies seeking capital are early stage enterprises without significant cash flow or earnings, and it is difficult to predict how profitable the company is going to be. A significant number of early stage enterprises fail, so there is a very real possibility in any investment of this type that you will lose all of the capital you invested. The other significant element of risk is liquidity: private equity investments typically must be held until the company is sold or goes public, which could be 2, 3, or 4 years in the future. You can’t simply log onto your investment account and put in a “sell” order as you can with a publicly traded security. The upside potential is extremely attractive, however. It’s not unusual for angel investors to earn a 50% compounded return on their money. And angels also get the satisfaction of watching a small, unknown company become large and successful-and knowing they contributed to its success.
Angel investing is definitely an activity for high net worth individuals. Although the amount of investment in any one deal varies widely, it is quite high, $20,000-$100,000 or more. The average investment in a single company by an angel is $78,000.
How do you get started in angel investing? There are angel investor organizations, called angel networks, in many cities in the US, and not just in traditional centers of venture capital investment such as the San Francisco bay area, or Boston. Joining one of these and attending their monthly meetings is a good way to see how angel investments are made. The investment can be made as a group to spread the risk or on an individual basis, each angel conducting their own due diligence and deciding whether to invest or how much to invest. By becoming part of an angel group, it allows you to network with other angels and learn from their experience. To find an angel group in your area, contact your local chamber of commerce, entrepreneur organization, or small business development center. You could also contact the business editor of your local newspaper.

During the current economic climate, there are factors that entrepreneurs look at more closely when it comes to starting up a business. The “where” and “how much” factors become a bigger part of the decision, as one looks to trim any unnecessary cost factors. Gone are the days where if you were technology based, you’d set up in Silicon Valley or if you needed to network with business contacts – set up shop in New York. Ironically, thanks to modern day technology, you can set up in a much wider range of locations.Entrepreneurs look at factors like the ease of recruitment, and as a result – have looked into the central states of the US, such as Colorado, where the workforce is well educated, quality of life is good, and cost of living is a big step lower than on the coasts. With hopes up about stabilisation of the economy, this is a great opportunity for aspiring entrepreneurs and small business start ups alike to take things to the next level. Over the last few years, several angel groups and individual investors have started to set up shop in cities like St. Louis (such as the Arch Angel Investor Network), again bucking the general trends. On the Central Investment Network – entrepreneurs in the Central states of the US get another chance to connect with angel investors. Members can get their business ideas and plans out to hundreds of local investors – and since Central Investment Network is part of the Angel Investment Network, members can connect with thousands of other investors from around the world. In fact the network grows continuously, with branches in over 40 countries and investments occurring both on a local and international basis. Of course, the plans have to be well thought out and organised, as while entrepreneurs may have less competition, the investors are also more choosy. Still, there are signs that more successful angel investment strategies such as venture capital investments are occurring within the central states. While some venture capital backed companies have gone bankrupt this year in the U.S, almost all of them are California based, and none of them are in the states that the Central Investment Network covers – which includes Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Montana, Utah & Wyoming.Find out more, by visiting http://www.centralinvestmentnetwork.com

Read the papers today, and you’ll feel like start-ups are a rare breed in 2009.  Many sources say less people are starting up companies, albeit successfully too – citing the lack of investors available as one of the top reasons. But perhaps they are not looking in the right places.  A paper in Philadelphia (Philadelphia Inquirer & Daily News) recently did a story in which a start-up CEO almost seemed to feel like securing angel investment was easier in this market than before.  And it makes sense, since less competition combined with more places to look for funding make this a good time for companies to secure investment.  It is true that angel investors are becoming more cautious, and one will need a strong, convincing business plan (or some already existing activity) in order to secure such funding, but this has always been the case.  However, sites such as the Mid-Atlantic Investment Network help potential entrepreneurs and existing start-ups alike find more channels in which to reach these investors.  Many companies will look to raise “Seed Capital” from a wide variety of courses, including friends and family.  But the Mid-Atlantic Investment Network allows members to look beyond that, with the ability to broadcast your plans to other potential investors online. While technology remains one of the top niches in angel investment (such as the recent development by an entrepreneur in Maryland to develop software that uses facial recognition technology to determine who can see the content on-screen), other fields are also attracting entrepreneurs and angel investors these days.  Our network has active investors and entrepreneurs in fields such as Real Estate, Retail, Business Services, Transportation, Health Care, Entertainment, Agriculture and more.  A wide range of investors are members, including various angel investors from within Mid-Atlantic regions such as Delaware, Maryland (including Baltimore), Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, etc), Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C, but also features investors located across the country and internationally. Join the Mid-Atlantic branch of the Angel Investment Network today and find someone to help get your business off of the ground.

Everyone knows that investing in ventures that make one’s money grow is an excellent means of securing one’s future. What escapes many investors is the understanding that powerful opportunities exist online which have the ability to greatly increase returns. Many of which have the ability to greatly outperform investments touted by the big firms. Knowing they exist but not knowing quite how to find them is the reason for much frustration for investors seeking such opportunities. However today, it is easier than ever. When you know where to look. In this Internet age, search engines have been tools utilized to locate all types of information. So I thought, why not use search engines to look for viable investment opportunities as well. I was really surprised at what I found in my exploration of this concept. Sure, I know readers of this article are thinking. The Internet has been used for investment information from the beginning. I know that. On this journey, however, I avoided searching for the investing related terms millions of other investors search for. I essentially tried to get off of the beaten path. I avoided terms such as; AMERITRADE, Ameritrade, TDAMERITRADE, TD Waterhouse, Online Trading, Online Stock Trading, Online Investing, Online Trading Services, Stock Trading, Buy Stock, Trade Stock, Stocks, Stock Market Trading, Online Trades, Investing, Investment, Investments, Online Investment, Stock Investing, Mutual Funds, IRA, Roth IRA, Online Trading Tools, Option Trading, Broker Services, Online Broker, Online Stock Broker, Online Brokerage, Stock Market, Active Investing, Active Trading, and Online Stock Research. I attempted to look for those investment opportunities that I knew had to be slipping under investor radar. I searched words like “Invention needs manufacturer”, “invention needs investors”, “Invention needs funds” and “Invention seeks funding”. Initially, I thought it strange that the results I was finding existed on sites like YouTube.com, PrWeb.com and a less known website called GoBigNetwork.com. Thinking that this was too easy, I investigated it further to determine whether this was just some quacks with an “underwater basket weaving gadget” or whether they were legitimate investment opportunities that had merit. I was actually pleasantly surprised to find that the opportunities were legitimate ventures that if funded and managed well could easily become the next big thing. Two opportunities that really stick out in my opinion are two investment opportunities that I found clearly listed on PrWeb.com. The inventor makes a compelling case.

Investment Opportunity 2 http://www.prweb.com/releases/2008/05/prweb917964.htm

There is a diverse assortment of investment opportunities but I chose to highlight these two because they clearly represent an extraordinary range of investment opportunities that exist online.

The name of the investing game is “high returns”. Excellent opportunities exist for those investors that would like to add powerful additions to their portfolios. Angel investors looking for the next big thing need only change the keywords they use to search for it.
